October 03 One month already...I have finish the first month of study here. So FAST!!! Really unbelievable...
The pack schedule here really even make me dont have any time to notice about the fast rushing time.
However, i do notice that, most of the subjects in my programe are really well-arranged and have very much relevance to one another.I am taking 6 subjects (16 credits) in this semester: Generic Anatomy,Functinal Anatomy, physiology,Movement Science,Principle of Physiotherapy Practice(PPTP), and 1 General Education which i choose Appreciation for Chinese Art and Design (really funny listening to the description of China's history in English >< )
Now i am going to tell you why i said they are well linking. We first start with the Functional Anatomy, for example the second week we learned about the thigh region. In this subject, we got a lecture and learn about all the bones, muscles(not only the quadriceps and hamstring muscles that we know before, there are more then 10 muscles here, and we need to know where the origin and distal attachment of the muscles), blood vessels and nerves that are in this region or pass through this region. This lecture really made me crazy in the first week as i haven got the book and i totally cant follow up Ms Shamay"s speedy talk. So, i found out that i really need to do the pre-reading(about 30-50 pages for each week, and there are many things to be memorised) when i got my book, and i felt it is much more easier to catch up then(although it is still.....).
Then, we will have the Anatomy Laboratory lesson on each Monday. That is what i have told you all before ovement science, what we learn is more related to biomechanics, like balance, equilibrium, gait, muscles' action... This is the favourite subject of mine because there are nothing to be memorised just need to have a clear concept of it... Thanks god, the only one subject which i dont need to keep the notes for finding extra time to revise. While for the physiology,haiz...I feel guilty to say that i have skipped the lectures for 2 weeks.I really felt that it was wasting of my time as i would definitely fall asleep although i tried very hard not to.Frankly speaking, physiology is a bit tough for me as most of the HK A-level students have done most of the topics what we are learning but I rather do reading on my own and look up for what i do not understand.
At last, with all the knowledge gained from that particular week, we are going to use it at the PPTP lab. This is quite an interesting 4 hours lab on every Thursday as the lab clothing is t-shirt + short pant + sandal and we are going to be looking at the surface anatomy among ourselves and going up and down for different learning sections.Till now, we are supposed to handle the technique of measuring joint range of motion(ROM),muscle strength using manual muscle testing system and some passive and active exercise.Although i first felt that this is the most pressureless lesson, i have soon found out that the practical test will be really horrible. There are too many different movement to be done like hip flexion, hip extension, knee flexion, knee extension, ankle inversion and eversion, ankle dorsiflexion and plantarflexion...
And now,it is the time we need to recall all the muscles and bones that we have learned in Fnctional Aatomy...It will definitely made you crazy~~~
Stacks of notes and loads of books are awaiting me..........................................................................
* HAPPY MID AUTUMN FESTIVAL...
* i dont go anywhere but we ( me,sam, wei xuan and others Malaysian)are having mooncake with 红豆水 and 汤圆 here
September 24 A Solemn and Interesting Anatomy Laboratory LessonI am having the Anatomy Laboratory lesson on each Monday. It was so interesting and i felt i have to write down something here.I was to write about this since the first day i got into the lab but i haven got to spend time here.
It is really a well-equipped lab, just as what the lecturer said,we have no excuse to do bad in Anatomy because, they are many different Anatomy books, plastic models of bones and ligaments ,X-ray slides, softwares that can give a very fine looks of each part of the body from different sides of view in the lab.
The instructors will first explain about the bones. We will get a real bone with us and identify every structures and landmarks of the bone ( for the region we study in that particular week,e.g. the thigh region/ the pelvis region).I found the most interesting part of this section is that we got to have enough understanding to judge is it the right/left side of the bone i am holding ,which part is supposed to be faced in front/back and how to locate the bone in myself. We will get to know why is it facing the particular direction and the reason of the prominences or structure of the bones. We also here to feel the curvature of the bones. It is fun ~~
Not only these, the MOST IMPORTANT thing is that, there are many cadavers (dead body) here. Actuclly i din't aspect and haven got myself prepared to study on the cadavers in the first week as we are not being told about this before.I only got to know it untill we are brought infront of the white cloth covered cadavers.
The lecturers or instructors however seem acting so normally when they uncovered the cadavers one by one after thier explaination on the plastic models.I pretended to be as clam as possible as i seen my coursemates din't even have any scary expression shown,so i have to be like them... Imagine that walking in between the beds of cadavers....The lab was almost soundless except a very low volume of explaination of the instructors. We are expected to memorise all the muscles, bones, blood vessels and nerves that we had learned in the Funtional Anatomy during the last lecture, although i cant do that every times.
We are here to identify (to find by flipping over different layers of muscles) everythings we had learned. The cadavers are being cut at different ways to expose different muscles of different layers. We have to try on different cadavers as there might be differences of structure between different people and sometime it is easy to identify a particular muscles in one cadaver but not the other. The arteries, veins and nerves look so alike and is really hard to differentiate them.
This lab is very useful as i will get more understanding of them which i cant get to know so clearly about it from the books. However, if you dint do any pre-reading or revise before coming to this lab, you will end up learning nothing here as all the muscles and blood vessels and nerves look so alike to you.Thats why the saying goes " No pain,No gain"...
So,every weekend i will be busy reading the "bible" --the Clinical Oriented Anatomy,a very very think book before going into the Laboratory with white lab gown at the cornermost building of my university--the Y core,
the highest floor--14th floor,
the strangest room---room 1444...
I pay my highest respect and gratitude towards people who are willing to sacrificed themselves here after their death...
September 11 University...I have finished my second week of study in university. Let me tell you little about what my feeling being an university student which i have desperately looking forward and wanted to know before i stepped into this stage.
Actually i have a quite pack time-table compare to friends from other courses, almost everyday i have classes from 8:30am till 5:30pm, about 1-2 hours break in between, just like what we used to have in our high school !! However, i am glad that not only Sunday,Friday and Saturday i have off days too...HUH~~~
There are thousands of people applied for the Physiotherapy program, according to my lecturer (Miss Dora,a kind and caring lady),however due to the great amount of money that the HK gourvement needed to invest for our program's facilities and equipments, they can only provide a limited places here,so i have 70 coursemates this year.We are used to have classmate who are of about our age to study together, however, the coursemates i have now are from a great diversity of background. To my surprise, there are quite a number of JUPAS students (mature students) in my course. They have great and wonderful background such as have had degree for Sport Scieces and some other related courses...
One of my new friend,Yuan Jing is even already a doctor!!! Another friend,Ann,have a degree of Pharmacology from UK,she really looks like my junior geography teacher Peng Ying Hui,so i like to talk to her as we already known for some time.Hui Ting,a Singaporean, have a degree of Sport Science from Australia, and work as a gym trainer in a physio's clinic before live in the room beside me,we always walk to school together.Another Australian guy also having a Sport science degree who used to help in his grandparents physio's clinic.I guess they have some experience in physiotherapy. They are professional like what our lecturer said,i will get to learn from them in the future.
I have also met some Hong Kong students, who are quite friendly, including Edward who born in Hong Kong and had his childhood here but gone to Singapore for 15 years and come back to Hong Kong again,haha....What a funny "story" he always need to explain repeatedly to new friends here.
This is what i have here, encounter with very very different people...
* Anatomy makes me crazy!!!
so many bones,muscles,blood vessels,nerves supply...
* Physiology makes me sleep~~ although they are quite similar as what we learn in biology, but it is futher more details,
and the lecture seem like talking to himself :( i have to work more for it
August 30 Travel Arround HKToday is the 10th day for me in HK,now it is time for me to do some report here...huh~~
People in Hong Kong seldom drive, most of them take the public transports or just walk.
Withiin the first week in HK,i haved tried for the air-bus,MTR,bus (its shape is more narrow),ferry and of course walk.
We got into one of the compartment of the arrived train, but we din't notice that it was a first class compartment. However, there weren't any people blocked us or collected extra fare from us. When we walked out from the MTR and saw other compartments which were crowded, i wondered how the staffs checked for passengers who are eligible to be in the first-class compartment... HAHA~~We were enjoying(sitting and watching news inside) in this almost empty compartment when people suferring from being sardined in the next compartments. However,i dare not get in it for the next time~~ We took this funny looking narrow double-decker to the immigration office to do the HKID. We were in the upper part and the ceiling is too low for our Malaysian tall guy : ) Just need to pay for HK 2 regardless how long is your journey . We also took ferry to the Tsim Sha Tsui although it is also reachable by on-road transportation. The building in the middle of the photo looks like the Sedney Opera House right ?? I was guessing that the building in the middle made up of several triangles is the famous building Ren Jun told told me before.I have forgotten its name again~~ It is a well known building because of its structure. I have checked with him and i got it correct...yeah!! I rarely see private cars here, only buses and taxi in this photo. My friend said this is because of the expensive petrol. Crowded...Rushing... Buildings compete to be the highest~~but would never win... I saw place for me to work in the future...haha Time Square in Hong Kong End here first, will continue posting in the near future.
*will have course's orientation and commencement ceremony tomorrow *start school on 1st September...will be busy then *so exited ! i found out our hall is going to have Jazz,Cardio Active and Body Balance workshops start in the mid-september!!! going to book it tonight, all are free of charge~~
August 23 My roomI have took some photos through my room's window. High rise buildings all around, thats why all the hot air trapped between them,it is actually not only hot but a feeling of the air is not moving. I think there is a scientific name about this fenomena but i cant remember what it called.
Garden in the air I can see a little part of the sea from my window. bed My desk We can have free call within HK using the telephone hang on the wall On the right side is my wardrobe We bought the fan yesterday because we cant stand the hotness. The fan is still without the front cover because we cant find screw driver My wardrobe, i cant take a full view of it because of the narrow room the left side of the photo is a reflection from the mirror on the door of the wardrobe
Althought the room is small but it is a better student accomodation compare to other Uni,i heard this from others. Yesterday we went to a senior house who has moved out from the student hall, and i feel i am lucky enough to stay here.
We dont use key in the student hall, everything using the key card(when we enter the hall, open the door of our room ) We also need to add value to our card so that we can use the air-con and the washing maschine. Now only do i know that i haven took any photos of the outside view of my student hall. I also haven gone to my University, tomorrow we will go there.(abt 15 mins walk from the hall)
